What Size Should a Real Estate Yard Sign Be?
The standard real estate yard sign is 18″ × 24″. It is large enough to read from a moving car, small enough that a single H-stake holds it upright in wind, and it fits every off-the-shelf sign frame and rider on the market.
Why 18″ × 24″ became the standard
It is a balance of three constraints. Readability: at 18″ × 24″ you can fit a name and phone number at a letter height that reads from a car doing 25–30 mph. Wind load: bigger panels act like sails and bend stakes or snap at the flutes. Compatibility: frames, riders and brackets are all built around this size, so you are not hunting for hardware.
How big should the text be?
The working rule is one inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. A phone number 3 inches tall reads from about 30 feet. On an 18″ × 24″ sign that means a name, a phone number and very little else. The most common design mistake is trying to fit an address, a website, a headshot, a brokerage logo and a QR code onto one panel — at driving speed none of it registers.
Portrait or landscape?

When to go bigger
Large lots, deep setbacks and roads with faster traffic justify 24″ × 36″ or a post-mounted panel. If the sign sits more than about 60 feet from where drivers pass, 18″ × 24″ text becomes hard to read at speed.
