Custom mesh banner zip-tied to a chain-link fence

Custom Mesh Banners

The banner for a fence, a scaffold or a job site. The wind blows through the weave instead of tearing it loose, and the hems and grommets that other shops charge for are already on it.

Built for the fence, not the wall

A solid banner on a chain-link fence is a sail. The first real gust loads every grommet, the hem tears, and the banner ends up in the next lot. Mesh is woven with about a third of its surface open, so the wind passes through and the banner just hangs there and does its job.

It is 10 oz mesh vinyl, UV printed in full colour, waterproof and UV safe. Every edge is hemmed and a brass grommet is set every two feet on all four sides — that is included, not an upcharge.

Where it goes

  • The fence around a job site, with the trade, the name and a phone number big enough to read from the road
  • Scaffolding and site hoarding on a build
  • The dumpster, the trailer, the tent at the market
  • Ballfield outfield fences and school fences for sponsors and spirit
  • A storefront or lot fence that faces a busy road

One side, on purpose

Fence banners are read from one side. Printing one side keeps the price down; the back shows a faint reversed ghost through the weave, which is normal for mesh. For a wall or window where wind is not the problem, a vinyl banner is the better buy.

File requirements

  • PDF or JPEG, single page
  • Built at the ordered size (a 4′ × 8′ is 96″ × 48″), or any exact scale of it
  • CMYK — no Pantone or spot colours
  • 150 dpi at full size is ideal; 50 dpi still reads fine from the street
  • Fonts converted to outlines
  • No crop marks and no bleed

Designing for a fence

  • It is read from a moving car at 50–150 ft. Three lines, maximum: what you do, who you are, how to call.
  • Letters need about 1″ of height per 10 ft of reading distance. On a 4′ × 8′ that means a phone number 8–12″ tall.
  • Keep everything 3″ inside the edge — the grommets sit in the hem band.
  • Big flat colour, strong contrast. Fine photos and thin type disappear into the weave.
  • Send your yard sign file if that is what you have; we rebuild it at banner size.

Two people, five minutes, a bag of zip ties.

Hold the banner up to the fence and set the two top corners first with a zip tie through each corner grommet.

Pull the bottom corners down and out until the banner is flat but not stretched, and tie those.

Fill in every remaining grommet — top, bottom and sides. Each one shares the load; skipping them is how banners tear.

Trim the zip-tie tails. On scaffold or a fence you take it down often, use bungee ball ties instead — they stretch with the gusts.

If it sags

A grommet was skipped, or the top row was tied before the banner was square. Cut the lowest ties, square it from the top corners again and work down. Mesh relaxes a little in heat; a snug re-tie in the first week is normal.

Mesh or vinyl — which one do I want?
Mesh if it hangs where the wind gets at it: a chain-link fence, scaffolding, a dumpster, the outfield fence. About a third of the surface is open weave, so gusts pass through instead of pulling on the grommets. A solid vinyl banner is the better buy for a wall, a storefront or a table — the colour is a touch richer and the small sizes cost less.
Will it stay up in the wind?
That is the point of it. The weave lets wind through, so the banner does not act like a sail. Use every grommet when you hang it — they are every two feet on all four sides — and it will ride out a storm that would have torn a vinyl banner off the same fence.
How do I hang it on a fence?
Zip ties through every grommet, pulled snug but not tight enough to pucker the hem. Bungee ball ties are the pro move on scaffold and on fences you take the banner off and on. Start at the top corners, then the bottom corners, then fill in. It takes two people about five minutes.
Is it printed on both sides?
One side. From behind you see a faint reversed ghost of the print through the weave, which is normal for mesh. If you genuinely need it read from both sides, two banners sewn back to back is possible — email us for a quote.
How does mesh print look?
Full colour, UV printed, outdoor rated. Up close you can see the weave, and colours read a shade softer than on solid vinyl. From the street — where a fence banner is actually read — it looks like any other banner.
What sizes can I get?
Four on this page: 3′ × 6′ ($79), 4′ × 8′ ($129), 4′ × 10′ ($149) and 6′ × 10′ ($199). We print any size up to 10 ft tall and far longer than any fence you own — email the measurements for a quote on anything else.
How long will it last outside?
It is 10 oz mesh with a UV print, waterproof and UV safe. Expect a full season on a job-site fence and a year or more on a storefront fence, longer if it comes down for the winter. The hems and brass grommets are the parts that usually go first on cheap banners; ours are stitched and included.
How fast will I get it?
Digital proof in 2–4 business hours. Approve it and it prints and ships the next business day via free FedEx Ground shipping from whichever of our California, Texas or Pennsylvania facilities is closest — usually two business days in transit.
Can I use my yard sign artwork?
Yes, and most of our customers do. Send the same file; we rebuild it at banner size. The one change we usually make is the phone number: on a 4′ × 8′ read from the road it wants to be eight to twelve inches tall.
