Mesh Banner or Vinyl Banner: Which One for a Fence?

Mesh for a chain-link fence, scaffolding or any spot the wind reaches; vinyl for a wall, a storefront or a table. About a third of a mesh banner is open weave, so gusts pass through instead of loading the grommets. Vinyl is solid, so colours read a shade richer and the small sizes cost less: a 3′ × 6′ vinyl banner is $70, the same size in mesh is $79, and a 4′ × 8′ mesh banner is $129.

Where each one belongs

A banner on a chain-link fence is a sail. Wind hits it, every grommet takes the load at once, and the hem is the first thing to go. Mesh is woven with roughly 30% of its surface open, so the wind goes through the banner instead of pulling on it. That is why construction fences, scaffolding, ballfield outfields and anything facing an open lot get mesh.

Vinyl is the better buy where wind is not the problem: a wall, a storefront, the front of a table, inside a gym. It is solid 13 oz material, prints a touch brighter, and in the small sizes it costs less than mesh for the same square footage.

Price, side by side

Our vinyl banners run $40 for 2′ × 4′ up to $70 for 3′ × 6′. Mesh starts at $79 for 3′ × 6′ and goes to $129 for 4′ × 8′, $149 for 4′ × 10′ and $199 for 6′ × 10′. Both include hemming, brass grommets every two feet, a designer proof and free FedEx Ground shipping, usually two business days.

The sizes are different on purpose. Vinyl is sold in the sizes people hang on walls and tables; mesh is sold in the sizes people hang on fences.

Colour and detail

Up close you can see the weave on mesh, and colours read a shade softer than on solid vinyl. From the street, where a fence banner is actually read, the difference disappears. What does not survive the weave is fine detail: thin type, small photos and gradients. Big flat colour and a phone number ten inches tall is the fence-banner formula, and it works on either material.

Finishing is the same on both

Hemmed on all four sides, #2 brass grommets every two feet, single sided as sold. Both are UV printed for outdoor use. Either one hangs with zip ties or bungee ball ties; mesh simply survives more weather on an open fence.

When another printer will cost you less

  • It hangs indoors on a wall. Buy the vinyl banner. Mesh exists for wind, and you pay a little more for it.
  • You need fifty of either. A wholesale banner printer beats a per-banner price at that volume; ours is built for one to ten.
  • You want it read from both sides of the fence. Two mesh banners sewn back to back is possible but a quote by email, and often two separate banners cost less.
