How Many Campaign Signs Do I Need?
Plan one yard sign for every 50 to 75 votes you need to win, then add a third for weather, theft and the supporters who ask for two. A race that takes 3,000 votes needs 54 to 80 signs; one that takes 8,000 needs 143 to 214. Order the smallest pack that covers the low end of your range, and keep the rest of the budget for replacements.
Start from the votes, not the budget
Find last time’s turnout for the seat — your county election office publishes it — and work out how many votes it takes to win: just over half in a two-way race, less in a crowded field. That one number sets the sign count better than any rule of thumb about the size of the town.
Why a third more
Signs disappear. Weather flattens some, mowers and road crews take some, and some walk off. Supporters ask for a second one for the corner. Budget the replacements at the start, when they cost the least, not in the last week of October.
Where they go
Supporters’ yards first — a sign in a neighbor’s lawn reads as an endorsement. Then the busy corners, with permission, double sided. Then everything else. Three signs on one corner are remembered; three spread thin are not.

When another printer will cost you less
- You are running county-wide or for state office. At 500 signs and up, a high-volume campaign printer with a two-week lead time will usually beat our price per sign. We will say so.
- Your town limits signs per lot or bans them before a date. Fewer, better-placed signs beat a stack in the garage. Ask the clerk before you order.
